Ukuphila Community Clean-Up Project

Our goal is to make sure that IY is neat and clean and that our people know how to keep this place clean. How does picking up litter help the community? Keeping it beautiful: Litter is an eyesore, plain and simple. Studies show that litter can negatively impact your sense of community and safety. When others pass you as you pick up litter, smile and say hello. It shows pride in the community and encourages others to do their part, too. Some of the benefits of keeping a clean environment: – Infections-free life. Unarguably, germs and other harmful microorganisms thrive in filth. – Increased self-confidence. Satisfaction with your environment automatically boosts your self-confidence. – Higher productivity. – Sense of propriety.

Funda Kunye

Funda Kunye means Learn Together in isiXhosa with the understanding that not only are the children learning but the caregivers are too. We have a holistic approach to the upliftment of the community through sustainable ECD centres, encouraging our caregivers to become entrepreneurs. Our projects are focused on the Imizamo Yethu and Hangberg areas of Hout Bay, Cape Town. Our greatest desire is to see children reach their God-given potential through early learning programs, and caregivers equipped with the necessary ECD skills and resources to teach and reach those children.

Our hope is to see our training and daily programme used productively in order to make a long-term difference in the lives of the children’s cognitive, emotional, social, physical and spiritual development.

Little Angels Educare Centre

Little Angels is a community centre for children and youth in the township of Hangberg in Cape Town, South Africa. It’s a registered not-for-profit: NPC 2015/373309/08. The centre was set up by Liezl Mathews in 2011, originally as a crèche as she saw a great need to keep children off the streets, away from drugs and troubled family relations. The crèche was meant as an option for families who could not pay the higher fees for a regular crèche. Today Little Angels look after approximately 80 children in the crèche at any one time, with many more lining up, wanting to enrol, but due to a lack of facilities and an inability to pay staff proper salaries, numbers have had to be capped. The numbers also fluctuate as family situations change.
